Nissan Fairlady Z Coupé 2002

The 2002 Nissan Fairlady Z Coupé belongs to the Z33 generation, which returned after the Z32 ended production in August 2000. First shown as a concept at the North American International Auto Show in 2001, it reached Japan and the United States for the 2002 model year. Within the Fairlady Z lineage, it continues a long sports-car tradition that began in 1969 with the S30 fastback two-seater. The dossier identifies it specifically as the Coupé body style, placing it among the closed-body versions of this modern Z chapter.

History

The Fairlady name predates the Z family by several years. Nissan used it from 1961 on a sports car roadster intended in part to support its commercial ambitions, especially in North America. In 1969, the company changed direction with the S30: the Fairlady Z became a two-seat hatchback coupe designed for grand touring. On export markets, this first wave was best known as the Datsun 240Z. Nissan states that more than 520,000 Z cars were sold during the first eight years, which helps explain the model line’s lasting influence.

The lineage then moved through the S130, Z31 and Z32 series. The 300ZX name arrived with the Z31 in 1983, and the Z32 launched in 1989 took the car further toward a more sophisticated and more technological direction. Z32 production ended in August 2000. After a gap, a concept shown at the 2001 North American International Auto Show previewed the Z33, which reached Japan and the United States in 2002. The 2002 Fairlady Z Coupé therefore marks the revival of the line after that interruption.

Production

Z32 production ended in August 2000, and the line returned with the Z33, sold in Japan and the United States in 2002. The dossier does not provide a production figure for the 2002 Fairlady Z Coupé itself, nor does it specify the plant, monthly timing, or market-by-market volumes. It only confirms the model year’s place in the revival of the Z family after the break between generations.

Evolution

The 2002 Fairlady Z Coupé belongs to the Z33, the generation that brought the Z name back after the Z32. The dossier describes it as using a modern V6-powered layout and being offered as both a coupe and a Roadster. The Coupé is therefore the closed-body form of this series, distinct from the open version that followed. In terms of visual identity, it moves away from the early S30 cars with vertical rear lights and from the Z32 with pop-up headlights, although the dossier does not provide model-year-specific mechanical details.

Compared with earlier generations, the Z33 continues the Japanese sports-car tradition while using a more contemporary design language and a modern architecture. For 2002, the Coupé label is enough to place it among the closed-bodied versions of the range, without adding unverified details about equipment, trim levels, or market-specific specifications.

Variants

Within the dossier, the Z33 is mainly associated with two body styles: Coupé and Roadster. The 2002 Nissan Fairlady Z Coupé is the closed-body version, available from the launch of the generation. The Roadster belongs to the same family but represents the open-top alternative, so it belongs to a different body style even if it shares the same Z33 basis. The dossier also notes that commercial names vary by market: Fairlady Z is the historic Japanese name, while other periods in the lineage used names such as Datsun 240Z, 280Z, 300ZX, 350Z and 370Z.

For 2002, no further sub-variant is given in the source material. The safest identification therefore comes from the combination Z33, Coupé and model year 2002, without extending that into trims, engines, or country-specific specifications that are not confirmed.
