Brand history

Matra, standing for Mécanique Aviation Traction, was founded in 1945 by Marcel Chassagny. Initially focused on aerospace and defense, the company diversified into automobiles in 1964 by acquiring Automobiles René Bonnet. This acquisition led to the production of iconic models such as the Matra Djet, Matra 530, Matra Bagheera, Matra Murena, and Matra Rancho. In 1984, Matra designed the first version of the Renault Espace, an innovative minivan. Production of this model was carried out in Romorantin-Lanthenay until 2002. In 2003, following the commercial failure of the Avantime, Matra Automobiles ceased its activities, ending nearly 40 years of automotive ventures.

Positioning

Matra distinguished itself through its innovative and bold approach in the automotive sector. By partnering with Renault for the production of the Espace, Matra contributed to the popularization of minivans in Europe. Models like the Matra Murena also left a mark with their unique design and performance. Although the company ceased its automotive activities in 2003, its legacy endures through these iconic models.

Photo recognition

To identify a Matra, look for distinctive design elements such as sleek lines and aerodynamic shapes. Models like the Matra Murena feature a compact and sporty body. Specific brand badges and logos, often located at the front and rear of the vehicle, are also key indicators.

Important models

The Matra Murena, produced from 1980 to 1983, is a three-seater sports coupe known for its innovative design and performance. It features a mid-engine and a fiberglass-reinforced plastic body, providing a unique driving experience. Although its production was limited, the Murena remains an iconic model in Matra's history.
