Maserati MC20 Spyder 2022

2022

The 2022 Maserati MC20 Spyder extends Maserati’s return to the supercar segment as the open-air derivative of the MC20. Part of the model’s first generation, it keeps the same technical foundation and engine as the Coupé while adding the experience of a retractable hardtop. Its appeal rests on the combination of Maserati’s sporting heritage, a distinctive design language, and the freedom of top-down driving. Like the rest of the MC20 family, it stands out with butterfly doors, a clean aerodynamic profile, and design details that emphasize visual simplicity and performance intent.

History

The MC20 was unveiled to the public in Modena on 9 September 2020 during the “MMXX: Time to be audacious” event. That debut marked an important return for Maserati to the supercar category after the MC12, which had been produced from 2004 to 2010. The name MC20 stands for “Maserati Corse 2020,” a clear reference to the brand’s motorsport heritage and to the beginning of a new chapter. Within this first-generation MC20 introduced in 2020, the Spyder arrived in 2022 as the open-top interpretation of the original formula. It keeps the shared platform and mechanical basis of the range while changing the driving experience through its convertible layout. The core idea remains the same: a modern Maserati supercar with a distinctive appearance and strong performance credentials, shaped by the brand’s sporting identity.

Evolution

Within the MC20 range, the 2022 Spyder is defined mainly by its retractable hardtop. Compared with the Coupé, it offers open-air driving without changing the model’s overall character or positioning. The dossier states that both versions share the same platform and engine, so the evolution is focused primarily on the driving experience and the atmosphere on board. The Spyder therefore preserves the MC20’s clean silhouette, butterfly doors, and aerodynamic lines while adding a more immersive and visual dimension. For supercar buyers, it answers a straightforward preference: enjoying the MC20’s design and performance-oriented identity with the option of top-down driving.

Variants

The MC20 family consists of two main first-generation versions: the Coupé, launched in 2020, and the Spyder, introduced in 2022. The Coupé uses a fixed roof and a rigid structure, while the Spyder features a retractable hardtop. According to the dossier, these differences are centered on the roof configuration and the driving experience, with no effect on the stated performance, since both versions use the 3.0-liter Nettuno V6 rated at 630 horsepower. The two variants also share the same platform and the same design language. The Spyder is therefore aimed at buyers who want the appeal of a Maserati supercar with the added freedom of an open-top model.
