History
Koenigsegg introduced the Regera as a concept at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2015, opening a new direction for the company. Before that, the brand’s identity had been built largely around lightweight, highly focused road cars with strong competition-inspired engineering. The Regera followed a different philosophy: it retained extreme performance while adding greater comfort, equipment, and ease of use. The production-specification car was presented at the 2016 Geneva show after a year of development, testing, and worldwide homologation work. Koenigsegg stated that more than 3,000 changes separated the concept from the production configuration. Those revisions included further development of the Direct Drive system, weight reduction, and final integration of the high-voltage battery technology. The defining engineering decision remained the absence of a conventional gearbox. The combustion engine drives the rear axle directly through the KDD system, while the electric motors provide launch assistance, torque fill, and torque-vectoring functions. The Regera is not divided into several officially identified generations. Available information instead separates the project into two development stages: the concept shown in 2015 and the production-specification car unveiled in 2016. The concept established the main technical principles, including the combination of a twin-turbocharged V8, three electric motors, and Koenigsegg Direct Drive. The production version then incorporated extensive revisions for development, durability, weight control, and worldwide homologation. Koenigsegg stated that more than 3,000 changes were made before the production car was revealed. For the model year represented by ScanRacer, there is therefore no documented split between multiple generations, facelifts, or distinct mechanical families. Key differences
The Regera’s most important difference from other contemporary Koenigsegg models is its transmission architecture. While many hypercars use a multi-speed gearbox, the Regera employs Koenigsegg Direct Drive, connecting the V8 to the rear axle without a conventional gearbox. Three electric motors support the system: two are linked to the rear wheels and a third is mounted on the crankshaft. This arrangement is designed to deliver immediate response and uninterrupted acceleration. The Regera also has a distinct grand-touring focus, with a more extensively equipped cabin, a removable structural hardtop, and the Autoskin system for its body closures and mirrors. Not every visible difference should be treated as a mechanical revision, however, because customer specification played a major role in the final appearance of each car. Within the ScanRacer context, the only listed distinction is the Base version for 2016.
Photo recognition
The Regera can first be identified by its very low two-seat coupe profile, dihedral doors, and extensive use of composite bodywork. Its active aerodynamic hardware is integrated into the design: the rear wing deploys from a top-mounted position, while the front flaps help manage aerodynamic load. The removable structural hardtop is another important clue; it can be detached and stored beneath the front hood. At the rear, titanium exhaust outlets and the sculpted areas around the lamps help distinguish the model, although exterior finishes vary substantially between customer cars. Inside, the Regera combines a luxury-oriented cabin with digital instrumentation and carbon-fiber sport seats. Its clearest identifying characteristic is its role within the Koenigsegg range: the Regera emphasizes hybrid power, refinement, and long-distance usability, whereas other Koenigsegg models from the same period generally place greater emphasis on low weight and circuit-focused performance. Wheels, paint colors, and exposed carbon-fiber patterns should therefore not be used alone to identify a specific version.
Important versions
The only version currently available in the ScanRacer context is the 2016 Regera Base. This label should be understood as a library classification, not as evidence of a simplified trim level or a single identical specification for every car. Koenigsegg built the Regera in very limited numbers and offered extensive individual customization. The most important historical distinction is therefore between the 2015 concept and the production-specification car presented in 2016. The production model retained the concept’s hybrid architecture and Direct Drive system while incorporating the revisions required for homologation, durability, and manufacture.
