Jaguar XKR-S 2011

Introduced at the Geneva Motor Show on March 1, 2011, the Jaguar XKR-S was the most performance-focused member of the X150-generation XK range. This 2+2 coupe combined a supercharged 5.0-liter petrol V8 with a six-speed automatic transmission and Jaguar’s lightweight aluminium body architecture. Jaguar quoted 550 horsepower, 680 Nm of torque, a 0–60 mph time of 4.2 seconds, and a 186 mph top speed. The XKR-S also received revised suspension, a 10 mm lower ride height, 20-inch forged alloy wheels, and aerodynamic changes including a carbon-fibre front splitter and rear wing. Its purpose was not to abandon grand-touring comfort, but to add sharper responses, greater high-speed stability, and a more distinctive character to the XK formula.

History

The XKR-S was unveiled at Geneva in 2011 as the new flagship of the XK range. It evolved from the supercharged 5.0-liter XKR, but used revised engine mapping and an active exhaust system to increase output and sharpen the car’s character. The result was 550 horsepower and 680 Nm of torque. Jaguar complemented the power upgrade with dedicated chassis work, including aluminium front suspension knuckles, revised rear geometry, stiffer springs and dampers, and a recalibrated active differential. The exterior changes were intended to serve a functional purpose as well as create a more aggressive appearance. New air intakes, extended side sills, a carbon-fibre diffuser, and a rear wing were developed to reduce lift and improve stability at speed. The XKR-S therefore became a more focused interpretation of Jaguar’s grand-touring concept while retaining the refinement and road usability associated with the XK.

Anecdotes

The XKR-S was named “Sports Car of the Year 2011” by Auto Bild Sportscars after a reader vote involving more than 70,000 participants. Jaguar also reported a 7-minute-51-second Nordschleife lap during testing by the German magazine. These details show how the car was positioned against high-performance prestige coupes of its era, although the reported lap time should not be treated as a universal result for every driver, tyre, or test condition.

Production

The XKR-S was launched as a series-production model rather than as a showroom-only concept or prototype. Jaguar described it at the time as its most powerful and fastest production sports car. The sources reviewed confirm the coupe’s 2011 launch and the convertible’s introduction later that year, but they do not provide a reliable official worldwide production total for the 2011 XKR-S coupe. A specific number of built cars should therefore not be assigned without further manufacturer or archival documentation. The “Base” designation also does not establish a separate production volume, since the available sources do not identify it as a confirmed factory production series.

Press reception

Specialist press coverage was broadly enthusiastic. Car and Driver praised the XKR-S for its immediate V8 response, composed ride, and ability to combine serious speed with grand-touring comfort. Auto Express highlighted its blend of acceleration, agility, and refinement, while also noting that traction could affect its standing-start performance. The magazine regarded the Jaguar as a credible alternative to established European performance coupes and a more expressive machine than the standard XKR. Jaguar also reported that the XKR-S won Auto Bild Sportscars’ 2011 reader poll in the production sports coupe category, ahead of the Mercedes-AMG C 63 and Audi RS5 in that market.

Evolution

Compared with the standard XKR, the XKR-S gained 40 horsepower and 55 Nm according to Jaguar’s figures, supported by revised engine calibration and an active exhaust. The chassis was reworked with a 10 mm lower ride height, firmer suspension settings, revised steering calibration, and an active differential. Forged 20-inch wheels and wider tyres reinforced its performance focus. The visual transformation was equally clear, particularly at the front and rear, where the car adopted a carbon-fibre splitter, extended side treatments, a diffuser, and a dedicated rear wing. The range was later expanded with the XKR-S Convertible, which Jaguar revealed at the Los Angeles Auto Show in November 2011.

Variants

The launch XKR-S was a fixed-roof coupe with a 2+2 seating layout. Jaguar later introduced a Convertible version, unveiled at the Los Angeles Auto Show in November 2011. It retained the supercharged 5.0-liter V8 with 550 horsepower and 680 Nm of torque, along with a claimed 186 mph top speed. The open-top model received its own structural, suspension, and aerodynamic adaptations intended to preserve the stability and body control expected from the XKR-S family. The sources consulted do not document a separate mechanical derivative specifically corresponding to the “Base” designation. That label can therefore be used as a catalog identifier, but should not be treated as a confirmed factory trim level without additional documentation.
