Brand history
Founded on August 29, 1962, by brothers Ahmad and Mahmud Khayami as "Iran National," Iran Khodro has become the largest automobile manufacturer in the Middle East, Central Asia, and North Africa. Initially, the company assembled Mercedes-Benz buses for the Iranian market. In 1966, a partnership with the British Rootes Group led to the production of the Paykan, based on the Hillman Hunter, which became Iran's "national car." The Paykan was produced until 2005, with a pick-up version continuing until 2015. In the 1990s, Iran Khodro diversified its production by manufacturing Peugeot models under license, such as the 405 and 206, strengthening its presence in the domestic and regional markets. In 2000, the company launched the Samand, a locally designed model, presented as Iran's "national car." In 2016, following the lifting of international sanctions, Iran Khodro resumed its collaboration with Peugeot by creating a joint venture named IKAP. Today, Iran Khodro continues to play a central role in the Iranian automotive industry, producing a diverse range of vehicles for both domestic and export markets. (iranicaonline.org)
