Ferrari LaFerrari Aperta 2016

The Ferrari LaFerrari Aperta is the open-top version of Ferrari’s hybrid hypercar, unveiled at the Paris Motor Show in September 2016. Its powertrain combines a naturally aspirated 6,262 cc V12 with an electric motor operated through the HY-KERS system, delivering a claimed total output of 963 horsepower. Designed as a two-seat roadster, it retains the LaFerrari coupé’s core technology and performance while receiving extensive structural and aerodynamic revisions for roofless driving. Ferrari quotes a top speed above 350 km/h and acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in less than three seconds. Built in exceptionally limited numbers, the Aperta stands among the most exclusive road-going Ferraris of the modern era.

History

The LaFerrari Aperta shares its technical foundation with the LaFerrari coupé, introduced in 2013 as Ferrari’s most advanced road car at the time. Ferrari presented the open version to the public at the 2016 Paris Motor Show, ahead of the company’s 70th-anniversary celebrations in 2017. The Aperta name had already been used for selected limited-production open Ferraris and clearly identifies the car’s roadster character.

The conversion involved far more than removing the roof. Ferrari revised the carbon-fibre structure to preserve body stiffness, while cooling airflow, aerodynamic channels and measures intended to control turbulence were redesigned for open-top use. The distinctive doors remain, although their fully open angle differs slightly from that of the coupé. Ferrari offered a carbon-fibre hardtop and a fabric roof solution, giving owners the option of driving fully exposed or with additional weather protection. Production and shipments began in 2016, making the Aperta one of the key Ferrari launches associated with the company’s anniversary programme.

Anecdotes

In September 2017, a unique LaFerrari Aperta was auctioned at Ferrari’s Fiorano circuit to benefit Save the Children. Ferrari prepared a special Rosso Fuoco exterior with a double white racing stripe, while the cabin combined black Alcantara, exposed carbon fibre and red inserts. The car sold for 8.3 million euros, with the proceeds directed toward educational programmes.

Production

Ferrari announced an initial production run of 209 LaFerrari Apertas. In 2017, the company added one unique car for a charity auction benefiting Save the Children. Ferrari’s financial and sustainability documents describe that vehicle as an extra addition to the original 209 cars, bringing the commonly accepted total to 210 Aperta examples. The final car was identified by its special livery and charitable purpose, while retaining the same mechanical foundation as the rest of the series. The Aperta is therefore considerably rarer than the LaFerrari coupé, which Ferrari states was built in 499 examples, excluding the additional coupé auctioned in 2016 for earthquake relief in central Italy.

Press reception

The LaFerrari Aperta attracted substantial automotive-media attention because Ferrari promised coupé-like performance despite the conversion to an open-top body. Autocar highlighted the availability of both a carbon-fibre hardtop and a fabric roof, along with the extensive work carried out on the chassis and aerodynamics. MotorTrend stressed that the Aperta was not simply a LaFerrari with its roof removed: the carbon structure, radiator arrangement and airflow-management systems were revised for the new configuration. Coverage at the time also noted that the available cars had already been allocated, underscoring the exceptional demand surrounding Ferrari’s limited-production roadster.

Evolution

The Aperta’s defining evolution from the LaFerrari coupé is its open body, but Ferrari made extensive changes to preserve the coupé’s dynamic qualities. Engineers revised the carbon-fibre structure, altered the positioning of selected cooling components and redesigned the airflow paths to manage heat and turbulence inside the cabin. Small deflectors around the windscreen also help control air movement when the roof is removed.

The hybrid powertrain remains fundamentally unchanged. Ferrari combines an 800-horsepower V12 with a 120 kW electric motor, producing a stated total of 963 horsepower. The seven-speed F1 dual-clutch gearbox is retained as well. Ferrari claimed performance broadly equivalent to the fixed-roof car, including acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in under three seconds and a top speed exceeding 350 km/h. The engineering objective was therefore not simply to create a convertible, but to preserve the LaFerrari’s high-speed ability in a structurally different body.

Variants

The Ferrari LaFerrari Aperta is the open-top derivative of the LaFerrari rather than a model family with different engines or power levels. Its published mechanical specification is consistent across the version: a naturally aspirated V12 supported by an electric motor and connected to a seven-speed F1 dual-clutch transmission.

The principal choice concerns the cockpit covering. Ferrari developed both a removable carbon-fibre hardtop and a fabric roof, allowing the car to be used in fully open form or with additional weather protection. The body also includes Aperta-specific changes around the doors, rear bodywork and windscreen area. One unique example, finished in Rosso Fuoco with a double Bianco Italia racing stripe, was prepared for a charity auction in 2017. It was not a separate technical variant, but a specially commissioned car created to benefit Save the Children during Ferrari’s 70th-anniversary celebrations.
