Ferrari 296 2022

Unveiled on June 24, 2021, the Ferrari 296 GTB is a two-seat, mid-rear-engined berlinetta that introduced a plug-in hybrid V6 beneath a Ferrari badge. Its powertrain combines a 2,992 cc twin-turbocharged V6 producing 663 hp with an electric motor, for a claimed combined output of 830 cv. Power reaches the rear wheels through an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission. Compact proportions, a digital cockpit and styling influenced in part by Ferrari racing prototypes from the 1960s give the 296 GTB a distinct identity among modern Maranello sports cars. The 2022 model year represents the car’s first commercial phase, before the open-top 296 GTS joined the range. Ferrari’s official material presents the standard coupe simply as the 296 GTB rather than using a separate “Base” badge.

History

Ferrari unveiled the 296 GTB in June 2021 as a new mid-rear-engined sports berlinetta. It occupies an important position in the company’s recent history because it is the first road car to wear a Ferrari badge while using a V6 engine. Ferrari connects the layout with its Dino and early V6 racing heritage, but combines that tradition with a plug-in hybrid system intended to support both performance and everyday usability. The combustion engine is a 120-degree V6 with the turbochargers positioned inside the V. A 7.45 kWh high-voltage battery supplies an electric motor integrated into the powertrain. The body references several Ferrari racing prototypes from the 1960s through its smooth profile, compact cabin and carefully shaped rear section. Commercial availability began for the 2022 model year. In April 2022, Ferrari introduced the 296 GTS spider, which shares the GTB’s core hybrid architecture.

Anecdotes

The “296” name follows Ferrari’s traditional numerical logic: “29” refers approximately to the engine’s 2.9-litre displacement, while “6” identifies the cylinder count. The 296 GTB is also the first Ferrari road car with a V6 to carry the Prancing Horse badge directly, following the earlier Dino road cars that used a separate marque. Its design pays tribute to Ferrari racing prototypes from the 1960s, particularly through the rear-cabin profile and the integration of the air intakes.

Production

Ferrari launched the 296 GTB for the 2022 model year after formally presenting it on June 24, 2021. The public material reviewed here provides detailed technical information about the car, its performance and its derivatives, but does not establish a verifiable production total specifically for 296 GTB examples. A precise model production figure should therefore not be stated. The range quickly developed around the standard GTB coupe, the optional Assetto Fiorano package and the 296 GTS introduced in April 2022. Ferrari’s publicly reported company-wide delivery figures do not, by themselves, isolate the number of standard 2022 296 GTB coupes produced.

Press reception

The 296 GTB received broadly positive attention from specialist automotive media for combining hybrid power, rear-wheel drive and approachable handling. Car and Driver emphasized the effectiveness of the electrified V6 and the car’s usability despite its technical complexity. Motor1 highlighted the return of six-cylinder power to a Ferrari road car and the hybrid system’s ability to deliver 830 hp. The best-documented 2022 recognition was design-related: a jury of automotive journalists awarded the 296 GTB the Car Design Award in the Production Cars category. That prize primarily recognized the vehicle’s design and its integration of technical and regulatory requirements, rather than serving as a universal ranking of performance.

Evolution

The 296 GTB is a major evolution of Ferrari’s mid-rear-engined berlinetta formula. Rather than simply replacing a V8 with a smaller engine, it combines a twin-turbocharged V6, an electric motor and a rechargeable battery in a rear-wheel-drive package. Ferrari quotes a total system output of 830 cv, with electronic controls managing the interaction between the powertrain, chassis and rear axle. Inside, the car uses a fully digital instrument and control environment derived from Ferrari’s newer cockpit philosophy. The family expanded in 2022 with the 296 GTS, an open-top model using the same core hybrid system. Ferrari also offered the Assetto Fiorano package for the GTB, adding lightweight components and more track-focused equipment. The package changes the car’s emphasis without creating a separate engine or transmission variant.

Variants

For the 2022 model year, the vehicle described here is the standard 296 GTB coupe. Ferrari’s official announcements do not identify this configuration with a separate “Base” badge; that label is best understood as a library distinction from optional equipment and later derivatives. The 296 GTB could be specified with the Assetto Fiorano package, which increased its circuit focus through lightweight parts, aerodynamic additions and dedicated suspension-related equipment. In April 2022, Ferrari expanded the family with the 296 GTS, a retractable-hardtop spider using the same 830 cv hybrid powertrain. The GTS is a distinct body style rather than a simple trim level of the coupe. Ferrari’s official technical material associates the standard 296 GTB with the same V6 hybrid architecture, eight-speed dual-clutch transmission and rear-wheel-drive layout.
