History
The Dodge Omni was introduced in 1978 as Chrysler's first front-wheel-drive subcompact car. Based on the European Simca Horizon model, it was developed to meet the growing demand for more compact and fuel-efficient vehicles. Production began at the Belvidere Assembly Plant in Illinois and continued until 1990, with production volumes reaching approximately 2.5 million units. The Plymouth Horizon version, derived from the Omni, often outperformed the Dodge Omni in sales. In 1987, the Dodge Shadow and Plymouth Sundance were introduced as successors to the Omni and Horizon.
Generations
The Dodge Omni underwent several evolutions during its production. In 1984, a minor revision introduced a new dashboard and a five-speed manual transmission. In 1987, to streamline production, all vehicles received a dashboard with tachometer, oil pressure, and voltmeter gauges. In 1990, the Omni underwent minor revisions, including the addition of a driver-side airbag and three-point seat belts for rear seats.
Key differences
The Dodge Omni was offered with several engines during its production. Early versions were equipped with a 1.7 L inline-four engine from Volkswagen, producing 75 horsepower. In 1981, a 2.2 L inline-four engine was introduced, providing increased power. In 1984, the GLH ("Goes Like Hell") version, modified by Carroll Shelby, was launched, offering superior performance.
Photo recognition
To identify a Dodge Omni, look for a compact five-door hatchback sedan. Older models may feature design elements characteristic of the 1970s and 1980s, such as chrome bumpers and round headlights. The sporty GLH versions are distinguished by specific badges and enhanced performance elements.
Important versions
The GLH version, modified by Carroll Shelby, is particularly notable for its enhanced performance. Introduced in 1984, it was produced until 1986, offering a sporty driving experience.
