History
The S4 story began with the C4-generation Audi 100. Introduced in 1991, it used a 2.2-liter 20-valve turbocharged inline-five producing 230 hp, with temporary overboost raising peak torque to 350 Nm. Audi positioned it as a successor to the Audi 200 quattro 20V. A sedan was followed by the Avant estate several weeks later. In 1994, the Audi 100 was renamed the A6, so the S4 name was replaced by S6. The S4 badge returned in 1997 on the Audi A4 B5. That car introduced a 2.7-liter twin-turbo V6 and was sold as a sedan and later as an Avant. The B6 generation, launched in the early 2000s, brought a major mechanical change: a naturally aspirated 4.2-liter V8. Generations

It should not be confused with the later A4-based S4 models: after 1994, the same commercial lineage became the S6. The B5 S4 established the model’s connection with the A4. Its 2.7-liter twin-turbo V6 gave the car a more compact and modern character, while sedan and Avant body styles supported its role as a practical performance car. The B6 adopted a naturally aspirated 4.2-liter V8 and, in selected markets, added a Cabriolet body style. The B7 was closely related to the B6: it kept the V8 but introduced revised bodywork along with changes to the suspension, drivetrain, and equipment. The B8 replaced the V8 with a mechanically supercharged 3.0 TFSI V6. It was offered as a sedan and Avant, without a separate S4 Cabriolet in this generation.
