Model introduction
Introduced on March 18, 2024, the Audi Q6 e-tron is the brand’s first series-production model based on the Premium Platform Electric, or PPE. This fully electric family SUV also marks a new stage for Audi in battery technology, charging capability, electronic architecture, and interior presentation. The range combines a conventional SUV body with a more streamlined Sportback shape, while a longer-wheelbase Q6L e-tron is intended for the Chinese market. The Q6 e-tron sits between Audi’s smaller and larger electric SUVs. Depending on specification, it can use rear-wheel drive or quattro all-wheel drive. In the ScanRacer catalogue, the model covers the 2024 and 2025 model years, with SUV, L SUV, and Sportback variants represented.
History
The Q6 e-tron belongs to Audi’s second major phase of electrification. After the launch of the e-tron in 2018, followed by the Q4 e-tron and Q8 e-tron, Audi developed the PPE platform with Porsche for electric vehicles in the midsize and upper segments. The Q6 e-tron is the first series-production model to use it. Audi unveiled the vehicle in Ingolstadt on March 18, 2024, and announced its launch in Germany and several other European countries from the third quarter of that year. Its production also made the Ingolstadt plant the site of Audi’s first battery-electric model built there. The range later expanded with a rear-wheel-drive Q6 e-tron performance and with the Q6 Sportback e-tron, shown publicly at the Paris Motor Show in October 2024. Audi also prepared the Q6L e-tron specifically for China. Its wheelbase is extended by 105 millimeters, and production was planned for the new Changchun facility, with customer deliveries announced for 2025. These developments show that the Q6 e-tron name refers to a family of body styles and market-specific versions rather than one globally identical configuration.
Generations
The Q6 e-tron launched in 2024 represents the model’s first generation. It is not a direct electric replacement for an earlier combustion-powered Q6; Audi designed it from the outset as a battery-electric SUV based on the PPE platform. This generation is identified by an 800-volt electrical system, a high-capacity traction battery, and the E³ 1.2 electronic architecture, which Audi presented as a new foundation for the vehicle’s digital functions. According to Audi’s technical information, the standard SUV is 4.771 meters long and has a 2.899-meter wheelbase. The Sportback version, announced in October 2024 for a launch around the end of 2024 and beginning of 2025, uses the same technical base but has a more sharply sloping roofline. The Q6L e-tron is a market-specific adaptation of this generation: it retains the family’s overall identity while emphasizing rear-seat space and range measured under China’s CLTC cycle. It is therefore more accurate to describe the model as one first generation offered in several body styles and regional forms than as a sequence of separate generations.
Key differences
The clearest differences are body-related. The Q6 SUV e-tron retains an upright profile, a more practical tailgate, and a strongly family-oriented layout. The Q6 Sportback e-tron uses a sloping roof and a more aerodynamic rear section; Audi quotes a higher maximum range than the SUV in some configurations, while cargo capacity and access differ. Both body styles share the PPE platform, the 2.899-meter wheelbase, and much of the same technology. The Q6L e-tron, represented here by the L SUV variant, is distinguished mainly by a 105-millimeter longer wheelbase and its Chinese-market focus. It should not be treated simply as a long-wheelbase trim of the European SUV: Audi describes it as a locally tailored model produced in China. Power outputs, battery choices, range figures, and equipment then vary according to market and specification. Those details should therefore be checked against the vehicle’s individual market and model year.
Photo recognition
The Q6 e-tron can first be identified by its closed front end, which replaces a conventional open grille with a broad inverted Singleframe element and lower functional air openings. Its profile combines a long wheelbase with short overhangs, a visual clue to its electric architecture. The sides feature an e-tron-specific insert, while flush door handles and clean body surfaces reinforce its modern appearance. At the rear, the conventional SUV has a taller roof and a more upright tailgate; the Sportback uses a more sharply inclined rear window and a visually lower tail. The digital light signatures of the headlamps and rear lamps can vary with equipment, but they are important identifiers for this generation. The Q6L e-tron is best confirmed through its Chinese-market context and visibly more generous rear proportions, since its exterior differences from the standard Q6 SUV can be relatively subtle. Badges, wheel designs, and lighting equipment should not be used alone to determine the exact version.
Important versions
The launch range includes the Q6 SUV e-tron, notably in quattro form and as the rear-wheel-drive performance version, together with the more powerful SQ6 e-tron. According to Audi’s 2024 presentation, the Q6 e-tron performance uses rear-wheel drive and a 100-kWh gross battery, with a quoted WLTP range of up to 641 kilometers. The Sportback follows the same technical logic with a more streamlined body and an Audi-quoted maximum range of roughly 656 to 657 kilometers, depending on the communication and specification. The Q6L e-tron is the long-wheelbase version developed for China, adding 105 millimeters to the wheelbase and offering a quoted CLTC range above 700 kilometers in certain configurations. Within the ScanRacer context, the listed variants are SUV for 2024, L SUV for 2024, and Sportback for 2025.
