History
Audi presented the A4 in October 1994 and launched the sedan in November of that year. It directly replaced the Audi 80 and received the internal B5 designation, continuing the company’s earlier B-series coding. Audi says the first generation was developed in 26.5 months and offered several engines and quattro versions from launch. Weight reduction, a four-link front axle and new five-valve gasoline engines were among its notable technical features. The B5 was followed by the B6 in the early 2000s and the B7 in 2004. These generations retained a broadly similar layout, although the B7 introduced a more assertive exterior treatment and an updated range. The B8, introduced from 2007 depending on market, made the car noticeably larger and moved the A4 onto Audi’s modular longitudinal platform. It also marked the gradual separation of coupe and convertible bodies into the distinct A5 family. The B9 arrived in 2015. Audi focused on lower weight, efficiency, driver assistance and connectivity. A major update introduced in 2019 brought revised styling, a touchscreen MMI system and mild-hybrid technology on several engines. Generations
The first generation, known as the B5, covers the A4’s debut from 1994 into the early 2000s. It is identified by rounded bodywork, a relatively narrow grille and, on many versions, separate headlamps and turn indicators. The B5 was sold as a sedan and Avant wagon; its 1999 facelift changed the lighting design and several exterior details. The B6 appeared around 2000. Its styling is sharper, with a more upright front end and more geometric headlamp shapes. Introduced in 2004, the B7 remained closely related to the B6 but can often be identified by its large Singleframe grille and redesigned bumpers. The B7 continued as a sedan and Avant, while the convertible associated with this period used a distinct body shell. The B8 arrived from 2007, depending on market. It is visibly larger, with tauter side surfaces, elongated lamps and a more driver-focused cabin. The facelifted version, commonly called the B8.5, received revised front-end and lighting designs. The B9 debuted in 2015. It introduced straighter surfacing, a broader grille and a more technology-led interior. The 2019 update is particularly easy to spot from its touchscreen MMI display and revised lighting elements. Body-style and market overlaps mean these dates should be treated as identification guides rather than universal production cutoffs.
Key differences
The Sedan uses a conventional three-box shape with a separate trunk. The Avant shares its mechanical basis but adds a hatchback and a more flexible cargo area; its roofline and rear pillars make it easy to distinguish. The Cabrio, represented over a shorter period in the covered range, has a dedicated two-door body and a folding soft top. The Allroad is more than an Avant fitted with quattro. Audi gave it increased ground clearance, underbody protection, wheel-arch extensions and larger wheels. These details create a more rugged appearance and separate it visually from a standard Avant. Badges such as quattro and S line, along with equipment grades, can change bumpers, wheels or exhaust outlets without indicating a new generation. Accurate identification therefore requires several clues together: body style, approximate year, headlamp and taillamp design, dashboard layout and the vehicle’s type code.

Start with the body style: four doors and a separate trunk indicate the Sedan, while a vertical tailgate and large rear opening identify the Avant. A soft top and two doors point to the Cabrio. On an Allroad, look for contrasting wheel-arch cladding, greater ride height and dedicated underbody protection. The front end is usually the most useful place to distinguish generations. The B5 has a rounded appearance and a relatively modest grille. The B6 uses a sharper front design, while the B7 is commonly identified by its large Singleframe grille. The B8 is larger and has elongated headlamps; the B8.5 received revised lighting signatures. The B9 combines tighter body surfacing, a broad grille and a more modern cabin. The 2019 B9 update added a large touchscreen MMI display. Wheels and bumpers can change with trim level, so identification should also consider the lamps, dashboard and vehicle type code rather than relying on one exterior detail.
Important versions
The Sedan is the historic A4 body style and accompanied all major generations. The Avant is equally important: Audi offered it from the early years and gradually positioned it as a practical wagon for family and business use. The Cabrio was a more specialized derivative, associated mainly with the early-2000s period and represented here through 2005. The A4 allroad quattro is the most distinctive version of the later range. Based on the Avant, it combines quattro all-wheel drive, raised suspension and protective exterior trim.
