80
Introduced in 1972, the Audi 80 was the compact family sedan that established Audi as a stronger force in the European market. Its original design focused on low weight, efficient packaging and modern engineering, including the first four-cylinder engines from the EA827 family. The first generation quickly became a commercial success and won the European Car of the Year award in 1973. Later revisions brought more aerodynamic bodywork, improved corrosion protection and, on selected versions, Audi’s quattro all-wheel-drive system. Between 1972 and 1991, the Audi 80 range covered several body styles and trim levels, from two- and four-door sedans to the Estate and Avant variants represented in the ScanRacer catalogue. The fourth generation arrived in 1991 and formed the final phase of the model before Audi introduced the A4 name.

Model introduction
History
The Audi 80 was unveiled in July 1972, at a time when Audi was reshaping and expanding its model range. Developed under chief engineer Ludwig Kraus, it used a notably lightweight body and a new family of overhead-cam four-cylinder engines. Audi states that more than one million first-generation cars had been produced by the end of its run in 1978, making the 80 the brand’s first major volume success. The second generation continued the same basic formula with a larger body and a progressively broader range. During the 1980s, the Audi 80 also became part of Audi’s expanding quattro story, with all-wheel drive offered on selected versions. The third generation, presented at the 1986 Frankfurt Motor Show, brought a much more distinctive technical and visual identity. Its fully galvanized body and quoted drag coefficient of 0.29 reflected Audi’s growing emphasis on aerodynamics, long-term corrosion resistance and production quality. The B4 generation arrived in 1991. Although closely related to the B3, it introduced a longer wheelbase, wider track dimensions, a redesigned rear axle and a body structure better suited to the Avant estate. The Audi 80 sedan was ultimately replaced by the Audi A4, which introduced Audi’s new naming system for this part of the range.
Generations
The first generation, commonly known as the B1, covers 1972 to 1978. It is identified by its clean, compact shape and two- or four-door sedan bodies. Lightweight construction and efficient four-cylinder engines were central to its design. An Estate body style is also represented in the production years listed in the ScanRacer context. The B2 generation began in 1978 and moved the Audi 80 toward a more mature appearance and a wider range of equipment. Names, engines and specifications varied between markets, so a precise mechanical description should not be inferred from a trim name alone. Introduced in 1986, the B3 is the most visually distinctive generation of the period covered here. Its smooth, aerodynamic body, fully galvanized shell and sharply defined details became characteristic of late-1980s Audi design. Audi Tradition records that the 80 was available with quattro from the beginning of B3 sales, depending on specification and market. The B4 arrived in 1991. Despite its close visual relationship with the B3, it incorporated substantial structural changes, including a longer wheelbase, wider track, a redesigned rear axle and a more practical luggage area. The Avant estate became a clearly integrated member of the Audi 80 family during this final phase.
Key differences
The main differences between generations are structural and visual. The B1 has a slim, straightforward shape, while the B2 appears larger and more substantial. The B3 is easy to recognize through its smooth sides, flush glazing and galvanized body shell; its design is considerably more aerodynamic than that of the earlier cars. The B4 keeps the same broad styling direction but adds a taller grille integrated with the bonnet, revised bumpers and more pronounced wheel-arch treatment. Body-style names should be used carefully. “Sedan” identifies the saloon body, while “Estate” and “Avant” refer to estate versions, but exact availability depended on model year and market. quattro all-wheel drive, diesel engines, sixteen-valve engines and specific equipment packages were not fitted to every Audi 80. Reliable identification therefore requires several clues together: body shape, production year, badges, trim details and mechanical components.
Photo recognition
Start identification with the body shape and front-end design. A B1 has a narrow, simple silhouette with very clean straight lines. The B2 looks more substantial and may use more enveloping bumpers, depending on model year. The B3 is usually recognized by its smooth surfaces, flush side glass, flowing roofline and low grille between rectangular headlamps. A galvanized body is not a complete visual identifier, but it is an important historical feature of this generation. The B4, introduced in 1991, has a heavier-looking nose, a taller grille and revised bumpers. Estate cars require particular care: the Avant name is associated with the B4, while the ScanRacer context also lists an Estate variant for 1976. Badges such as 16V, quattro, diesel or individual trim names can provide useful clues, but badges may have been removed or replaced during the car’s lifetime. The vehicle identification number, original paperwork and market-specific documentation remain the most reliable ways to confirm an Audi 80’s exact version.
Important versions
The 1972 B1 is essential to the Audi 80 story because it introduced the modern model line and its lightweight engineering approach. The Sedan remained the representative body style and is continuously present across the years listed in the ScanRacer context. The 1976 Estate is a less common configuration within the supplied catalogue data. The B3 is especially important to Audi because of its fully galvanized body, aerodynamic design and the availability of quattro on selected versions. The 1991 B4 represents the final stage of the Audi 80 name before the arrival of the Audi A4. The Avant is significant in this transition, combining the revised B4 structure with a more practical estate body and helping broaden the model’s everyday usefulness.
