Aston Martin DB11 Coupé 2016

The 2016 Aston Martin DB11 Coupé marks a new phase for the brand, replacing the DB9 with a more modern technical and stylistic approach. Unveiled at Geneva in March 2016, it launched Aston Martin’s “Second Century” plan and introduced a bonded aluminium structure designed to improve rigidity while making better use of cabin space. In this first production form, the Coupé was fitted with a 5.2-litre twin-turbo V12 paired with an eight-speed ZF automatic transmission. As a two-door grand tourer, the DB11 kept the character of earlier DB models while presenting a more contemporary design language.

History

The DB11 launches Aston Martin’s “Second Century” plan and stands as the direct successor to the DB9. Revealed at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2016, it is more than a mild update: it introduces a new technical foundation and a fresh interpretation of the brand’s styling. Its body is built around a bonded aluminium structure, selected to combine stiffness, relatively low weight, and better interior packaging.

The 2016 Coupé is the first series-production version of this new generation. Aston Martin fits it with its 5.2-litre twin-turbo V12 mounted in a front-mid position, paired with an eight-speed ZF automatic gearbox. At the time, the company described the DB11 as a way to renew the brand’s visual language while preserving the grand touring purpose associated with earlier DB models. The result is a shape that remains elegant and taut, but also incorporates integrated aerodynamic solutions, including the rear Aeroblade system.

Evolution

Within the DB lineage, the 2016 DB11 Coupé breaks with the idea of being a simple updated DB9. It introduces a new platform and a new balance between styling, structure, and aerodynamics. Sculpted side surfaces, a wider grille, and very slim rear lamps all express Aston Martin’s effort to modernise its identity while keeping the grand touring codes intact.

The Coupé is the purest form of this first DB11. Its fixed roof supports the car’s focus on rigidity and cabin isolation, while the body incorporates airflow management aimed at high-speed stability. The range later expands with a V8 version in 2017 and then the Volante, but the 2016 Coupé remains the starting point of the DB11 family.

Variants

For 2016, the DB11 Coupé is the launch version and the only body style identified in the dossier for this first phase. It uses the 5.2-litre twin-turbo V12, which separates it from the later variants added to the range. In 2017, Aston Martin introduced a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 Coupé, giving the DB11 a different mechanical character, but that belongs to the model’s later development rather than the launch car.

The Volante arrived later, retaining the DB11’s overall architecture while switching to an open-top body. These engine and body-style changes show how quickly the DB11 expanded into several interpretations while keeping a shared foundation. For the 2016 version, the identity therefore rests mainly on the V12 Coupé layout and the model’s original specification.
