Alpine A290 2024

The Alpine A290 is an electric sport hatchback unveiled on June 13, 2024, at Le Mans. It is the first model in Alpine’s new electric range and uses the AmpR Small technical platform also found beneath the Renault 5 E-Tech, while receiving its own suspension, braking and steering calibration. The five-door body seats five and remains compact, measuring approximately 3.99 metres in length. The 2024 range uses a 52-kWh battery and offers two power levels, with styling influenced by Alpine’s motorsport heritage. Key details include the double-X lighting signature, steering-wheel controls marked “Recharge” and “Overtake,” and a multi-link rear axle designed to combine responsive handling with everyday comfort.

History

The A290 emerged from Alpine’s plan to expand beyond the A110 sports coupe. Before the production car appeared, the brand presented the A290_β show car in May 2023, previewing a small electric performance model influenced by rally design and the Renault 5. The production version was unveiled in June 2024 and became Alpine’s first fully electric series-production car. Alpine positioned it as a more accessible and practical entry point to the brand, rather than a replacement for the low-slung A110. The car is assembled in Douai within Renault Group’s ElectriCity industrial network, while its electric motor is built at the Cléon Megafactory. That arrangement reflects the group’s plan to manufacture the vehicle in France. Orders opened in France on July 30, 2024, with the launch range consisting of the GT, GT Premium, GT Performance and GTS versions.

Anecdotes

The A290’s steering wheel includes controls linked to Alpine’s motorsport image: an “Overtake” button and a “Recharge” rotary control. Its double-X lighting signature recalls the auxiliary lamps used on rally cars. Alpine also developed a driving sound called Alpine Drive Sound, created with Devialet and fitted to selected versions. The Première Édition adds a historical reference through its limited run of 1,955 cars, corresponding to the year Alpine was founded.

Production

Series production of the Alpine A290 began in 2024 at Douai, within Renault Group’s French ElectriCity industrial network. The electric motor is built at the Cléon Megafactory. Alpine announced a limited run of 1,955 cars for the Première Édition, but the sources reviewed do not provide a total production figure for the complete A290 range or for a version identified as “Base.” The documented number should therefore be treated specifically as the allocation for that special series, not as an overall production total for the model.

Press reception

Early road tests published in 2024 generally highlighted the balance between sporty handling and everyday comfort. WIRED praised the A290’s agility, suspension tuning and integrated technology, while criticizing its relatively high listed weight and the limited value of some onboard entertainment features. Car and Driver emphasized the rally-influenced styling, compact dimensions and front-wheel-drive layout, while describing the performance as adequate rather than extraordinary for an electric car. French automotive publications likewise noted the quality of the ride and the chassis’s playful character. Recurring reservations concerned rear-seat room and reduced real-world range during more energetic driving.

Evolution

The A290 evolved from the dramatic A290_β show car shown in 2023 into a more conventional production vehicle. The concept previewed a central driving position and an extremely theatrical shape, whereas the road car uses a familiar five-seat layout. Alpine retained several visual themes, including the X-shaped front lighting, wider proportions and Formula 1-inspired steering-wheel controls. Compared with the Renault 5 on which it is technically based, the A290 receives unique bodywork, revised chassis tuning, Brembo brakes and a multi-link rear axle. For 2024, the range is chiefly differentiated by equipment levels and two electric power calibrations rated at 180 and 220 hp.

Variants

At its 2024 launch, the Alpine A290 was offered in four main versions: GT, GT Premium, GT Performance and GTS. The GT and GT Premium use the 180-hp motor, while the GT Performance and GTS receive the 220-hp configuration. Equipment differences include tyres, brakes, upholstery, infotainment features and comfort items. Alpine also introduced a limited Première Édition derived from the GTS and restricted to 1,955 cars. The number refers to 1955, the year Jean Rédélé founded Alpine. The “Base” designation does not appear in the official launch range nomenclature, so it is not possible to assign a specific power output or equipment level to that label without a market-specific source.
