Brand history
Established in 1959, the Zaporizhzhia Automobile Building Plant (ZAZ) is Ukraine's leading automobile manufacturer, located in the city of Zaporizhzhia. The company was founded on the basis of an agricultural machinery plant established in 1863 by Dutch industrialist Abraham Koop. In 1960, ZAZ began its automotive production with the ZAZ-965 model, nicknamed the "Zaporozhets." This compact rear-engine vehicle was designed to be affordable and accessible to the Soviet population. Over the decades, ZAZ expanded its model range, producing cars, buses, and trucks. In 1998, the company formed a joint venture with Daewoo Motors, known as AvtoZAZ-Daewoo, to assemble Daewoo models in Ukraine. After Daewoo's bankruptcy in 2001, the Swiss company Hirsch & Cie acquired Daewoo's stake in the joint venture in 2003. ZAZ continued to produce models under its own brand, including the ZAZ Lanos, ZAZ Forza, and ZAZ Vida. Today, ZAZ is recognized for its ability to produce vehicles tailored to the needs of the Ukrainian market while maintaining international partnerships to diversify and modernize its production.
Positioning
ZAZ positions itself as Ukraine's leading automobile manufacturer, offering a range of vehicles tailored to the local market's needs. The company has evolved by integrating modern technologies and establishing strategic partnerships while maintaining its national identity. Its ability to produce affordable and reliable vehicles has strengthened its position in the Ukrainian market.
Photo recognition
To identify a ZAZ vehicle, look for distinctive features such as simple body lines, rear-mounted engines, and functional designs. Older models like the ZAZ-965 have rounded shapes and compact sizes. Newer models, like the ZAZ Lanos, have more modern lines while retaining design elements characteristic of the brand.
Important models
The ZAZ-965, nicknamed "Zaporozhets," was the first model produced in 1960, characterized by its rear engine and compact design. The ZAZ-968, introduced in 1967, improved performance and comfort. The ZAZ Tavria, launched in 1988, was a key model in the 1990s, offering an affordable alternative for Ukrainian families. More recently, the ZAZ Lanos, produced from 2004, has been a popular model in the Ukrainian market.
