Brand history

Founded in 1908 by John Willys, the Willys-Overland Motor Company quickly became the second-largest automobile manufacturer in the United States, after Ford. In 1912, the company acquired the license to produce sleeve-valve engines, used in Willys-Knight models. In the 1920s, Willys expanded its portfolio by acquiring the F.B. Stearns Company, continuing the production of luxury cars under the Stearns-Knight brand. The Great Depression forced the company to reorganize in 1933, but it rebounded by focusing on military vehicle production during World War II, notably the famous Jeep. After the war, Willys expanded its lineup to include civilian models, solidifying its position in the off-road vehicle market. In 1953, Willys-Overland merged with Kaiser Motors to form Kaiser Jeep, marking a new era for the brand. (en.wikipedia.org)

Positioning

Willys positioned itself as a pioneer in the production of off-road vehicles, meeting military needs during World War II with the Jeep, and then offering civilian models suited for rough terrains. This focus enhanced its reputation as a robust and reliable manufacturer capable of producing versatile vehicles for a variety of uses.

Photo recognition

To identify Willys vehicles, look for distinctive design elements such as clean lines, round headlights, and unique front grilles. Military models like the Jeep MB are characterized by their sturdy chassis and compact dimensions. Civilian models, such as the Aero, feature more aerodynamic bodies and refined finishes.

Important models

Among Willys' iconic models, the Aero stands out with its aerodynamic body and powerful engine, providing a comfortable driving experience. The CJ (Civilian Jeep) model was designed for civilians, offering a more comfortable and versatile version of the military Jeep. The M606 model is an enhanced version of the Jeep, intended for specific military applications, with modifications for increased performance.
