ID.5
Launched in 2022, the Volkswagen ID.5 was the brand’s first fully electric SUV coupé. It uses Volkswagen’s MEB platform, with a 77-kWh net battery mounted in the floor and rear-wheel drive on the standard versions. Its body combines a short front section, a sweeping roofline and a rear hatch, while retaining a 2.77-metre wheelbase. In Pro Performance form, the rear motor produces 150 kW, or 204 PS, and Volkswagen quoted a WLTP range of up to 520 km depending on equipment. The range also included the dual-motor, all-wheel-drive ID.5 GTX. The 2022 model year represents the car’s first production phase, with series manufacturing beginning at Volkswagen’s Zwickau plant in Germany. Trim names and equipment could vary according to market and specification.

Model introduction
Launched in 2022, the Volkswagen ID.5 was the brand’s first fully electric SUV coupé. It uses Volkswagen’s MEB platform, with a 77-kWh net battery mounted in the floor and rear-wheel drive on the standard versions. Its body combines a short front section, a sweeping roofline and a rear hatch, while retaining a 2.77-metre wheelbase. The range also included the dual-motor, all-wheel-drive ID.5 GTX. The 2022 model year represents the car’s first production phase, with series manufacturing beginning at Volkswagen’s Zwickau plant in Germany. Trim names and equipment could vary according to market and specification.
History
Volkswagen introduced the ID.5 as the sixth fully electric model in its ID. family and as the company’s first electric SUV coupé. Market launch was planned for 2022, following the public presentation of the ID.5 GTX in 2021. The vehicle was developed around Volkswagen’s Modular Electric Drive Matrix, or MEB, already used by the ID.3 and ID.4. Its battery sits between the axles, helping create a spacious passenger compartment despite the sloping roofline. Series production of the ID.5 and ID.5 GTX officially began at Zwickau on January 27, 2022. This marked the completion of the German plant’s conversion into a dedicated electric-vehicle facility. The ID.5 shared substantial technical architecture with the ID.4, but used a more streamlined body and a sportier visual concept. Volkswagen positioned it as a flagship within its compact electric range, highlighting aerodynamic efficiency, connectivity and driver-assistance technology. The initial powertrain programme combined rear-mounted motors rated at 128 or 150 kW with the dual-motor ID.5 GTX. Exact names, outputs and equipment could vary by market and production specification, so period documentation is more reliable than assuming one universal global range structure.
Generations
The Volkswagen ID.5 represents a single launch generation for the 2022 model year covered here. It is not a conventional two-door coupé: the body retains five doors, a rear hatch and SUV-style seating, while adopting a fastback roof profile. Its technical foundation is the MEB architecture used across Volkswagen’s electric ID. family, with the high-voltage battery in the floor and a rear-mounted motor on the rear-wheel-drive versions. Volkswagen’s initial technical information gives the ID.5 an overall length of roughly 4.60 metres, a width of 1.85 metres and a 2.766-metre wheelbase. The ID.5 Pro and ID.5 Pro Performance used a 77-kWh net battery. The GTX added an electric motor on the front axle and all-wheel drive. It also differed slightly in body dimensions, being taller and carrying a quoted aerodynamic drag coefficient of 0.27, compared with 0.26 for the rear-wheel-drive models. These versions should not be treated as separate generations. They belong to the same first production series and are primarily distinguished by their powertrain, output, chassis calibration and exterior detailing. Market-specific trim structures may use different names or combine equipment in different ways.
Key differences
The main distinction is between the rear-wheel-drive models and the GTX. The ID.5 Pro and ID.5 Pro Performance use a single permanently excited synchronous motor on the rear axle. Volkswagen’s launch data listed outputs of 128 kW and 150 kW respectively, together with a 77-kWh net battery and a 160-km/h top speed. The Pro Performance was quoted at 8.4 seconds for 0–100 km/h. The ID.5 GTX adds an asynchronous motor at the front and all-wheel drive. Its stated system output was 220 kW, or 299 PS, with a 0–100 km/h time of 6.3 seconds and a 180-km/h top speed. Volkswagen quoted up to 490 km of WLTP range for the GTX, below the up-to-520-km figure given for the rear-wheel-drive versions. The difference reflects the additional motor, all-wheel-drive system and associated efficiency requirements. Wheels, lighting, interior equipment and trim names could vary between markets.
Photo recognition
The ID.5 is primarily identified by its five-door SUV-coupé body. The front end is short and largely closed off, with a smooth nose, a light strip visually linking the headlamps and a relatively compact bonnet. In profile, the roof descends steadily towards the rear before meeting a sharply angled hatch, while the wheel arches and ride height retain an SUV character. Flush-fitting door handles and LED lighting are common on launch examples, but their availability depended on trim and market. The GTX is best recognised by its sportier treatment: dedicated bumpers, black exterior accents, red details and more assertive wheel designs. A GTX badge may appear on the front wings or tailgate, depending on market specification. Wheels, paint and lighting are not conclusive identification points because they could be optional or shared across trims. For a reliable confirmation, use the vehicle’s trim markings, factory documentation or identification number rather than relying on exterior appearance alone.
Important versions
The launch range included the ID.5 Pro, ID.5 Pro Performance and ID.5 GTX, although available names and equipment varied between countries. The 128-kW Pro was the entry point, while the 150-kW Pro Performance delivered quicker acceleration with the same 77-kWh net battery. The GTX was the performance flagship, combining two electric motors, all-wheel drive, 220 kW and dedicated exterior treatment. The ScanRacer data supplied for this model lists only one “Base” variant for 2022. That library label should therefore remain neutral and should not automatically be treated as equivalent to a Pro, Pro Performance or GTX specification without supporting vehicle-level documentation.
