California
Introduced in the late 1980s, the Volkswagen California is a factory-developed camper van derived from the Transporter family. It was designed to combine the everyday practicality of a light commercial vehicle with the accommodation of a compact motorhome. Its defining features include a pop-up roof, integrated sleeping areas and a fitted interior intended for touring. Across successive generations, the California evolved from a model closely associated with the T3 into a more sophisticated camper based first on the T6 and later on the T7 Multivan. The ScanRacer coverage shown here includes California variants associated with the T3, T4, T5, T6 and T7 families, with catalogue years extending from 1988 to 2024. Those displayed ranges describe the available catalogue coverage and may not represent every market, body style or local sales period.

Model introduction
History
The California emerged during the later years of the Volkswagen T3, a rear-engined Transporter generation introduced in 1979. Volkswagen states that the California and Caravelle became increasingly popular during the mid-1980s, while the ScanRacer coverage begins in 1988. The move to the T4 brought a major technical change: the Transporter adopted a front-mounted engine and front-wheel drive. A longer front end, revised suspension and the availability of two wheelbases created a broader foundation for camper conversions and other body styles. According to Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, the T5 was launched in 2003 and placed greater emphasis on the cabin, driver’s workplace and model variety. The California was built in Hanover for the first time during this generation. The T6 followed in 2015 with a redesigned front end, updated engines, driver-assistance systems and revised infotainment. The 2019 T6.1 update introduced a redesigned dashboard, expanded connectivity, an updated power-steering system and further drivetrain revisions. For 2024, the California T7 moved to a different technical basis. It was developed from the long-wheelbase Multivan and uses the MQB platform. Volkswagen announced standard sliding doors on both sides, a pop-up roof and, in selected markets, a plug-in-hybrid powertrain combined with 4MOTION all-wheel drive.
Generations
The T3 is identified by its compact proportions, very short front end and rear-mounted mechanical layout. California examples from this period represent the earliest stage of the model’s documented history and remain closely associated with the classic Volkswagen camper image. In the supplied ScanRacer data, the T3 is represented by 1988. The T4 introduced a longer front section, a front-mounted engine and front-wheel drive. That change significantly altered the driving position, vehicle balance and the way space could be arranged inside the camper. The supplied catalogue references the T4 in 1996, which also falls within the mid-cycle period identified by Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles. The T5 retained the proportions of a modern van while expanding the range of body styles, engines and equipment. Its production of the California at Hanover is an important distinction for the generation. ScanRacer lists the T5 from 2006 to 2009. The T6, launched in 2015, is primarily distinguished by its revised front design, electronic equipment and driver-assistance technology. The supplied data covers it from 2015 to 2019. The T7, represented by 2024, moves away from the traditional Transporter basis and uses the long-wheelbase Multivan and MQB platform. It introduces a more flexible interior concept, two sliding doors and, depending on the market, a plug-in-hybrid powertrain.
Key differences
The main differences between generations are technical. The T3 uses a rear-mounted engine, while the T4 introduced a front-mounted engine and front-wheel drive to the Transporter family. The T5 represents an important industrial change for the California, with production moving to Hanover and a broader equipment range. The T6 retained the familiar camper-van concept but added more electronics, driver-assistance systems and connectivity; the T6.1 update should not automatically be treated as an entirely separate generation. The T7 is more distinct because it is based on the long-wheelbase Multivan and the MQB platform rather than the traditional Transporter foundation. Its layout provides two sliding doors and a more flexible division of interior and exterior living areas. Volkswagen also announced a plug-in-hybrid version with 4MOTION, although the exact engine and trim availability varies by country. The ScanRacer year ranges should therefore be read as catalogue references, not as a universal timeline covering every California sold worldwide.
Photo recognition
A California T3 can usually be identified by its boxy body, relatively upright windscreen and short front overhang. Its proportions and rear-mounted mechanical layout clearly separate it from later generations. The T4 has a longer bonnet and a more pronounced front section, providing the most visible clue to its front-engined architecture. The T5 uses tighter, more modern body lines, a more integrated cabin and more regular side volumes. The T6 looks related but introduces revised headlights and front-bumper styling; T6.1 vehicles generally have a newer dashboard and updated multimedia equipment. The 2024 T7 California has a more passenger-car-like appearance because it is based on the Multivan. Its contemporary glazing, two sliding doors and revised camper layout are useful identification clues. A pop-up roof is important but not conclusive, since aftermarket conversions can use similar equipment. The generation should ideally be confirmed by checking the exterior details, dashboard, interior furniture, badges and vehicle documentation together.
Important versions
The main trim names announced for the T7 California are Beach, Beach Tour, Beach Camper, Coast and Ocean, with availability varying by country. Beach versions focus on greater day-to-day flexibility, while the Beach Camper adds a compact rear kitchen. Coast and Ocean models use a more complete kitchen installation and occupy different positions within the range. Volkswagen has also presented both a TDI diesel powertrain and an eHybrid 4MOTION plug-in-hybrid option in selected markets. In the supplied ScanRacer data, the available model families are T3, T4, T5, T6 and T7. The displayed year ranges do not necessarily cover every trim, engine or special edition sold in each country. The precise combination of generation, model year, market and equipment level should therefore be checked before treating a version label as universal.
