Smart overview

Smart history

Smart's history dates back to 1972 when Daimler-Benz envisioned an ultra-compact city car in response to increasing traffic congestion and pollution. This concept evolved in 1994 with the creation of Micro Compact Car AG, a joint venture between Daimler-Benz and Swatch, aiming to develop an innovative urban vehicle. The name "Smart" is a combination of "Swatch," "Mercedes," and "Art." In 1997, the first model, the Smart City-Coupé, was presented at the Frankfurt Motor Show, followed by production in 1998. In 2002, Smart collaborated with BRABUS to create high-performance versions of the Fortwo. In 2007, the brand entered electromobility with the Fortwo Electric Drive. In 2019, Smart formed a joint venture with Geely Automobile Co., Ltd., marking a new era for the brand with an entirely electric lineup. The Smart #1 was introduced in 2022, followed by the Smart #3 in 2023, and the Smart #5 in 2024. (fr.smart.com)

Smart positioning

Smart has always positioned itself as an innovative urban mobility solution, offering compact vehicles suited for dense urban environments. With the shift to an entirely electric lineup, Smart aims to meet sustainable mobility needs while maintaining its distinctive character. The collaboration with Geely Automobile Co., Ltd. in 2019 strengthened this direction, enabling Smart to expand its product portfolio and explore new market segments. (fr.smart.com)
