Samsung was founded in 1938 by Lee Byung-chul as a small trading company. Over the decades, the conglomerate diversified into various sectors, including electronics, textiles, and construction. In the 1990s, Samsung decided to enter the automotive industry. In 1994, Samsung Motors was established, with a plant in Busan built to Nissan's technological standards. However, due to the Asian financial crisis, Samsung sought a strategic partner. In 2000, Renault acquired 70% of Samsung Motors' shares for $512 million, leading to the formation of Renault Samsung Motors. This collaboration enabled Renault Samsung Motors to produce models such as the SM5, SM3, SM6, and SM7, solidifying its position in the South Korean automotive market.
