Brand history
Founded in 1937 as Svenska Aeroplan Aktiebolaget (SAAB), the Swedish company initially focused on producing aircraft for the Swedish Air Force. In 1945, SAAB diversified into the automotive sector, launching its first car, the Saab 92, in 1949. This model was followed by the Saab 93 in 1955, the Saab 96 in 1960, and the Saab 99 in 1967, the latter marking a significant advancement in the brand's development. In 1969, SAAB merged with Scania-Vabis to form Saab-Scania AB, thereby strengthening its market position. In 1989, the automotive division was restructured into an independent entity, Saab Automobile AB, with General Motors acquiring a 50% stake in 1990. However, in 2011, after financial difficulties and unsuccessful takeover attempts, Saab Automobile filed for bankruptcy, ending the production of cars under the SAAB brand.
Positioning
SAAB has always stood out for its commitment to innovation and safety, both in aviation and automotive sectors. The brand earned a reputation for its robust and safe vehicles, incorporating advanced technologies for their time. Although automotive production ceased in 2011, SAAB's legacy endures, particularly through its ongoing involvement in the defense and security sector.
Photo recognition
To identify a SAAB vehicle, look for distinctive design elements such as the sloped front hood, round headlights, and characteristic clean lines. Older models, like the Saab 96, feature smooth curves and a compact silhouette, while newer models, like the Saab 9-3, showcase a more modern design while retaining the brand's spirit.
Important models
Among SAAB's iconic models are the Saab 99, produced from 1968 to 1977, the Saab 900, manufactured from 1979 to 1994, and the Saab 9-3, produced from 1998 to 2007. These vehicles have marked the brand's history with their innovative design and performance.
