Brand history

Founded in 1873 by Christian Schmidt and Heinrich Stoll in Riedlingen, the NSU company relocated to Neckarsulm in 1880. Initially specializing in knitting machine production, it quickly shifted to bicycle manufacturing in 1886, then to motorcycles in 1901. In 1905, NSU launched its first automobile, the Type A model, marking its entry into the automotive industry. However, in 1929, facing financial difficulties, the company sold its automobile factory to Fiat, refocusing on motorcycles. After World War II, NSU resumed automobile production in 1957 with the Prinz model, a small rear-engine vehicle. In 1964, it introduced the Wankel Spider, the first production vehicle equipped with a Wankel rotary engine. In 1967, the Ro 80 model was presented, recognized for its innovative design and dual-rotor rotary engine. In 1969, NSU was acquired by the Volkswagen Group, merging with Auto Union to form Audi NSU Auto Union AG, before being integrated into Audi in 1985. (audi-mediacenter.com)
