Brand history

Founded in 1939 by engineer Renzo Rivolta in Genoa, the company Isothermos initially specialized in manufacturing refrigerators and electric water heaters. In 1942, after a bombing in Genoa, the company was relocated to Bresso, near Milan. In the 1950s, Iso diversified into producing motorcycles and scooters, with notable models such as the Isoscooter (1950) and Isomoto (1954). In 1953, the company transformed into Iso Autoveicoli S.p.A. and ventured into automobile production with the revolutionary Isetta, a three-wheeled microcar designed for urban transport. The Isetta achieved international success, with licenses granted to BMW in Germany, VELAM in France, and Romi in Brazil. In the 1960s, Iso shifted towards luxury sports cars, producing models like the Rivolta GT 300, Grifo, Fidia, and Lele, equipped with Chevrolet V8 engines and bodies designed by renowned designers such as Bertone and Ghia. Despite its success, the company ceased operations in 1974 due to the oil crisis and increased competition. (museoauto.com)

Positioning

Iso positioned itself as an innovative manufacturer, combining urban efficiency with sports performance. With the Isetta, it addressed the post-war need for economical mobility, while its luxury sports cars targeted the high-end market by blending Italian design with American power. This dual approach allowed Iso to stand out in the automotive industry, offering vehicles suited to different market segments. (museoauto.com)

Photo recognition

To identify an Iso, look for distinctive features such as the egg-shaped body, the unique front door that opens forward, and bubble-like windows. The luxury sports models showcase elegant lines, Chevrolet V8 engines, and bodies designed by renowned Italian coachbuilders like Bertone and Ghia. Iso badges, often placed at the front or rear of the vehicle, are also a key indicator. (museoauto.com)
