GMC overview

GMC history

GMC, a division of General Motors, was founded in 1912 following GM's acquisition of the Rapid Motor Vehicle Company. Established in 1902 by Max and Morris Grabowsky, this company produced some of the earliest commercial trucks. Under GM's leadership, GMC rapidly expanded its production to include utility vehicles, heavy trucks, and buses. During World War II, GMC supplied over 600,000 trucks to the Allied forces. Post-war, production diversified, but GMC gradually ceased manufacturing certain commercial vehicles, focusing on light trucks, SUVs, and vans. In 1996, the division was renamed GMC, dropping "Truck" from its official name.
