Brand history
Founded in 1914 as Kwaishinsha Motorcar Works, the Japanese company produced its first car, the DAT, in 1914. In 1931, it was renamed Datsun, a name combining "DAT" and "son." In 1934, Datsun merged with Tobata Casting Co., forming Nissan Motor Company. After World War II, Datsun resumed production in 1947 with the Type 15 model. In the 1960s, the brand experienced global expansion, exporting models like the Bluebird and Fairlady. In 1981, Nissan decided to gradually phase out the Datsun brand, unifying its products under the Nissan name. The last car bearing the Datsun name was sold in 1986. However, in 2013, Nissan relaunched the Datsun brand for emerging markets, starting with the Go model in India. Since then, Datsun has produced affordable models for markets such as India, Indonesia, Russia, and South Africa.
Positioning
Datsun was positioned as a brand offering affordable and reliable vehicles, aiming to democratize access to automobiles for a wide audience. The brand emphasized quality, performance, and timeless design, seeking to meet the diverse needs of drivers and lifestyles. This approach allowed Datsun to build a strong reputation in international markets, notably in North America and Europe.
Photo recognition
To identify Datsun models, look for distinctive elements such as the Datsun logo, often located at the front of the vehicle. Iconic models include the 240Z, a sports car recognizable by its sleek silhouette, and the Bluebird, a popular sedan. Model numbers like 510 or 240Z are also key indicators.
Important models
Among Datsun's important models are the 240Z, a sports car launched in 1969 that revolutionized the affordable sports car market. The Bluebird, introduced in 1959, became a success both domestically and internationally. The 510, produced from 1968 to 1973, is recognized for its robust engineering and was a rally favorite. The Sunny, launched in 1966, allowed kei car owners to move up to something bigger. The 1000, introduced in 1966, was a key model in Datsun's expansion into the international market.
