Brand history
Founded in 1919 by Carl F. W. Borgward, the German company Borgward quickly emerged as a major player in the automotive industry. In 1924, it introduced the Blitzkarren, a three-wheeled utility tricycle, notably used by the Reich's postal service. In 1929, Borgward took over Hansa-Lloyd AG, developing models like the Hansa Konsul. After World War II, production resumed with models such as the Hansa 1500, followed in 1954 by the Isabella, which became the brand's most popular model. In 1959, the P100 was introduced, featuring an innovative pneumatic suspension. Despite these technical advancements, the company faced financial difficulties, leading to its bankruptcy in 1961. Production resumed in 1967 in Monterrey, Mexico, but ceased in 1970. (borgward.co.za)
Positioning
Borgward positioned itself as a brand offering superior vehicles, combining elegance and technical innovation. The Isabella, for example, was praised for its modern design and reliability, competing with luxury models of the time. Despite financial challenges, the brand left a lasting legacy in the automotive industry. (classiccarpassion.com)
Photo recognition
To identify a Borgward Isabella, look for an elegant body with flowing lines, a front engine, and a rear-wheel-drive layout. The coupe and convertible versions feature lower roofs and smoother rooflines. Models produced after 1958 have redesigned rear lights, reminiscent of tail fins. (borgwardclub.nl)
Important models
The Isabella was available in several variants, including the sedan, coupe, convertible, and station wagon. The coupe, introduced in 1957, was designed by Carl Borgward for his wife Elisabeth and was produced in series from 1957.
