Vanquish

2001 - 2024

The Aston Martin Vanquish is a high-end grand tourer powered by a V12, introduced in 2001 as the British marque’s new flagship. Its history spans three distinct generations: the V12 Vanquish built from 2001 to 2007 at Newport Pagnell, the Vanquish produced from 2012 to 2018 at Gaydon, and the model launched in 2024. The first generation combined a naturally aspirated 6.0-litre V12 with a structure using aluminium, composite elements and a carbon-fibre central tunnel. The second generation adopted carbon-fibre exterior panels and introduced the open-top Volante body style. The current model retains the front-engined grand-touring concept but uses a 5.2-litre twin-turbo V12 producing 835PS. Within the ScanRacer library, the referenced coverage includes the V12 Vanquish, Volante and Base entries across the listed model years.

Model introduction

History

Unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2001, the V12 Vanquish was intended to showcase Aston Martin’s technological renewal. It became the last model built at Newport Pagnell before production moved to Gaydon. Its naturally aspirated 6.0-litre V12 produced 460bhp and drove the rear wheels through a six-speed automated manual transmission operated by steering-column paddles. Aston Martin also highlighted its advanced construction, combining bonded and riveted extruded aluminium sections with a carbon-fibre central tunnel and composite body components. The V12 Vanquish S, revealed in 2004, raised output to 520bhp and added revisions to the suspension, brakes, aerodynamics and steering. Production ended with the limited V12 Vanquish S Ultimate Edition, created to mark the close of new-car production at Newport Pagnell. Aston Martin states that 2,589 V12 Vanquish cars of all versions were built. The Vanquish name returned in 2012 on a new grand tourer positioned above the DB9 and intended to fill the flagship role previously occupied by the DBS. That second generation remained in production until 2018, when it was followed by the DBS Superleggera. A third generation arrived in 2024.

Generations

The first generation, commonly known as the V12 Vanquish, covers 2001 to 2007. It is identified by its classic grand-tourer proportions, long bonnet, metal grille and relatively short rear deck. Its naturally aspirated 6.0-litre V12 and paddle-operated automated manual gearbox are among its defining technical features. The V12 Vanquish S was the higher-performance evolution, with 520bhp and visible changes to the grille, rear bumper and boot-lid spoiler. The second generation was unveiled in 2012 and entered production from 2013, remaining available until 2018. It used an evolved VH architecture, carbon-fibre exterior panels, a 6.0-litre V12 and styling influenced by the One-77. The coupe was offered with either 2+0 or 2+2 seating, depending on specification and market, while the Volante convertible joined the range from 2013. The later Vanquish S produced 600bhp. The third generation, launched in 2024, introduced a major technical step with a 5.2-litre twin-turbo V12, bonded aluminium structure, electronic rear differential and carbon-fibre bodywork. It remains a front-mid-engined, rear-wheel-drive grand tourer, but its 835PS output and modern chassis place it well beyond the performance level of its predecessors.

Key differences

The generational differences are comparatively easy to establish. The 2001-2007 V12 Vanquish has a visually narrower body, horizontal rear lamps and a paddle-operated automated manual transmission with its controls mounted around the steering column. The 2012-2018 Vanquish looks wider and more sculpted, with carbon-fibre body panels, blade-shaped LED rear lights and elongated side surfaces. It also uses a ZF automatic transmission rather than the first generation’s automated manual system. The Volante is identified by its folding fabric roof and distinct rear-deck treatment. The third-generation car, introduced in 2024, has a broad concave grille, bonnet vents, contemporary headlamp signatures and seven rear light blades. It replaces the earlier naturally aspirated V12 with a 5.2-litre twin-turbo unit. S versions generally indicate more power or sharper dynamics, but the exact changes depend on the generation. A badge alone should therefore not be used to infer identical equipment or performance across all Vanquish model years.

Photo recognition

To identify a first-generation car, look for the long-bonnet coupe profile, tightly meshed metal grille, horizontal rear lamps and paddle controls mounted behind the steering wheel. A V12 Vanquish S may feature a more open grille, front splitter, revised boot lid and raised central brake light. The second generation has tighter surfacing, vertical blade-style rear lamps, flush-fitting door handles and long side strakes or vents. The Volante adds a retractable fabric roof and a different rear-deck treatment. Later Vanquish S models use a more assertive presentation and additional aerodynamic details. The 2024 car is distinguished by its very wide grille, bonnet vents, four exhaust outlets with squared-off circular shapes, modern LED headlamps and Kamm-style rear end. Reliable identification should combine visual inspection with the model year, chassis number, body style and original documentation. Equipment, trim and exterior details can vary by market, and an S badge does not carry exactly the same meaning across all three generations.

Important versions

The V12 Vanquish is the founding version, produced from 2001 to 2007. The V12 Vanquish S, launched in 2004, is the more powerful development of that first family, while the 2007 Ultimate Edition represents the closing series associated with Newport Pagnell. In the second generation, the 2012-2018 Vanquish coupe forms the core of the range, while the Volante adds an open-top body style and is listed for 2013 in the supplied ScanRacer context. The later Vanquish S produces 600bhp and is one of the most significant variants of that period. The third-generation model introduced in 2024 revives the name with an 835PS twin-turbo V12. In the ScanRacer data provided here, the visible entries are V12 Vanquish, Volante and Base. The context states that four variants exist, but only three are described individually, so the unnamed entry should not be identified without additional catalogue data.
