Revealed in January 2013 and shown publicly at the Geneva Motor Show, the Aston Martin Rapide S was a substantially revised version of the British marque’s four-door sports car. Its naturally aspirated 6.0-litre V12 produced 550 bhp and 620 Nm, representing a significant increase over the outgoing Rapide. The update also brought a taller grille, revised chassis settings and an engine mounted approximately 19 mm lower in the car. Aston Martin quoted a 0–62 mph time of 4.9 seconds and a 190 mph top speed. Four individual seats, swan-wing doors and an aluminium structure preserved the model’s distinctive identity. The result was intended to offer the pace and emotional appeal of a sports car while retaining the long-distance comfort and practicality expected from a grand tourer.

History
The Rapide became Aston Martin’s first production four-door car since the 1930s. Launched for the 2010 model period, it combined the marque’s established design language with four individual seats and a practical, foldable luggage area. For 2013, Aston Martin developed that foundation into the Rapide S, placing greater emphasis on performance. The main mechanical change was an updated 5,935 cc AM11 V12, with revised breathing, engine management and internal components helping to raise output to 550 bhp and 620 Nm. The engine was also mounted lower in the chassis, improving the centre of gravity while contributing to pedestrian-protection requirements. The 2013 car retained a six-speed Touchtronic 2 automatic transmission and rear-wheel drive. Its international debut came at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show, where the Rapide S was presented as a more powerful and more overtly sporting successor to the original Rapide.

Anecdotes
The Rapide S was displayed at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show with two show cars, one finished in Volcano Red and the other in Selene Bronze. Its enlarged grille was more than a styling statement: Aston Martin described it as the largest fitted to one of its cars while meeting contemporary pedestrian-protection requirements. The engine’s approximately 19 mm lower position served the same safety objective and also helped the car’s handling balance.
Production
The Rapide S belongs to the first model year of the updated version introduced in 2013. Unlike the original Rapide, which was strongly associated with production at Magna Steyr in Austria, available model-history information indicates that the Rapide S was built on Aston Martin’s Gaydon production line in the United Kingdom, alongside other VH-architecture cars. No dependable official total for 2013 Rapide S production is established by the sources consulted. A precise annual or model-wide figure should therefore not be presented as fact. The separate Centenary Edition is commonly documented as a limited run of 100 cars, but that number applies only to the special edition rather than to the regular Rapide S range.
Press reception
Automotive coverage generally acknowledged the Rapide S as a meaningful performance upgrade over the original Rapide, with a more sporting character. Autocar highlighted the power increase, the lower-mounted V12 and Aston Martin’s decision to position the car more clearly as a four-door sports car. Reviews from Auto Express and Road & Track also praised its driving appeal, exhaust note and distinctive character. The main reservations concerned its considerable weight, large dimensions and the compromise between grand-touring comfort and sharper handling. The Rapide S was therefore not presented as a lightweight or uncompromising sports car. Instead, it was regarded as a fast, characterful four-door Aston Martin that retained the refinement and long-distance ability expected of a luxury GT.
